SUPER-shucker Sam Tamsanguan of Wiltons Restaurant (Jermyn Street, London)won first price in last week’s Tabasco® British Oyster Opening Championship 2005 at Bibendum Oyster Bar. Sam beat off stiff competition from eleven other talented shuckers and opened 30 native oysters in 3 minutes 35 seconds to claim the title of British Champion for the fifth time!

Sam’s next challenge awaits him at the Galway International Oyster Festival (Saturday 24th September 2005), where he will be competing against the speediest shuckers from around the world.

This year’s championships saw the closest ever times with Fredrik Lindfors from Franco’s Restaurant (Jermyn Street, London) taking second place opening 30 oysters in 3 minutes 43 seconds – just 8 seconds behind Sam. Fredrik was followed by Armando Lema from Coastline Galicia Fishmongers (Abbey Road, London) who stormed into third place with a respectable time of 4 minutes 8 seconds.

The championships sponsored by Tabasco for the thirteenth year, have become an eagerly anticipated event on the social calendar. Celebrity guests included Richard Corrigan and Christine Hamilton as well as celebrity TV chefs such as Brian Turner, Ross Burden, Reza Mahammad and Patrick Anthony.
