Norwegian Centre of Expertise to open in the Bergen region Published:  28 April, 2006

A GROUP of businesses and research institutes in the Bergen region of Norway have been named as comprising the ‘Norwegian Centre of Expertise’ within the area of underwater technology. The Institute of Marine Research is one of several big research institutes which will be part of the centre together with communities in the region and heavy-weights in trade and industry.

The centre will mainly focus on surveillance and activities in the sea, and on installation, operation and maintenance of underwater equipment.

The aim is to become world leader in this area.

The new expert centre will function as a network of companies, institutes and community which are to work together.

The trade and industry part of it is strongly represented by heavyweights such as Statoil and Hydro, but also by smaller companies. Academic institutes such as the Bergen University College, the Institute of Marine Research, Sintef, the University of Bergen will also help make the group more competitive and although many of the enterprises are competitors in everyday life this is recognition of the advantages of wider cooperation, a spokesperson for Institute of Marine Research involved in the project said.
