HELGA Pedersen, the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries, is tipped as the likely deputy leader of the Labour Party, Norway’s dominant political party and the leading member of the government majority alliance.

Pedersen, 34, appears set to succeed party deputy leader Hill-Marta Solberg. Member of Parliament Eirin Sund from Rogaland, withdrew as an opposing candidate on Wednesday, reports Aftenposten.

“I have decided to throw in the towel and not stand as a deputy leader candidate at the national congress next week. Helga Pedersen has wide support and we in the Rogaland Labour Party have taken this into account,” Sund told weekly magazine Ny Tid.

Pedersen is the youngest cabinet minister in the majority alliance of the Labour-Socialist Left-Centre parties. is published by Special Publications.
