THE first round of the National Federation of Fishermens Organisations’ (NFFO) regional tour is now complete. Since January Alan McCulla, chief executive of the Anglo North Irish Fish Producers Organisation, has visited ports, beaches and bays stretching from Cullercoats to La Coruna, Selsey to Holyhead, on behalf of the NFFO.
After nearly 50 meetings with fishermen and their representatives, the NFFO now has a wealth of information about the problems faced by fishermen in different ports, and it knows how the NFFO should evolve to respond to these problems effectively.
Mr McCulla said: There was overwhelming agreement between fishermen that the National Federation is vital.
“It was recognised that ours is a small industry and that we shouldnt allow Government and other bodies to divide our industry further and conquer it.
“With the information gathered in round one of the regional tour, the NFFO is now set to become even more closely aligned to the needs of fishermen.”
He is looking forward to starting round two of the NFFOs regional tour.
This time, hell be focussing on bringing fishermen within ports together forming, reforming or strengthening local fishermens associations and advising fishermen how to react to rising fuel prices, quota limitations and other threats to the industry.
His first port of call is the South-east, where hell be next week fishermen will be notified by their local representative of meeting times and places. If youd like to arrange a meeting with Alan, please call 01904 635430.
