The harvest-ready barramundi reportedly escaped into the sea off the Tiwi Islands, about 80km north of Darwin, after the company’s cages reportedly broke in king tides.
The Norwegian company involved, was Marine Harvest, and ABC radio reported that at least 100 tonnes of fish might have escaped.
In September, the barramundi producer lost 35,000 fish or 100 tonne in a similar incident.
