MacNEIL WELCOMES UKBA TEMPORARY REPRIEVE FOR FISHERMEN FROM THE PHILIPINNES Published: 29 June, 2009
Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus MacNeil has influenced the UKBA to suspend any action for the time being against the deportation of fishermen from the Phillipines working on Scottish fishing boats.
Mr MacNeil said: ‘Having reviewed this issue the UKBA have informed me today that they are not now going to deport Filipino nationals working as fishermen in Scotland next week as was planned. This is a temporary measure but one which will be much welcomed by the fishing industry.
‘Having being working on this issue intensely now for the past two weeks, I am glad that I have been able to influence UK Ministers who now understand the difficulties the loss of these fishermen would have created and have given us breathing space.
The UKBA will get in touch with fishing skippers in the coming week; meanwhile, we will keep working to get the fishermen attached to Scottish boats back to Scotland.’
