Leading Scottish processor up for sale Published: 09 June, 2006
LEADING Scottish haddock processor George Noble of Fraserburgh has hit problems due to haddock quota restrictions and an attempt is now being made to sell the business as a going concern.
The firms 40-strong workforce has been warned of the threat of redundancy and managing director George Noble has expressed great sadness and difficulty over the situation.
Ironically, Nobles had been planning to move to larger purpose-built new premises in the town.
Processors in the North-east of Scotland have long warned that more jobs losses are inevitable because of the impact of a 13.2% cut in haddock availability this year although signs that catching has been slowing down has raised hopes that the fishery could last longer than expected this year.
However processors have also been put under further strain by rocketing prices for what raw material that is available at the quayside, something that cannot be recouped from their customers.
