FUNDING of £4.4million for strategic infrastructure developments at Kilkeel Harbour has been announced.

The work is to be carried out between now and 2004 and the cash will go to three priority projects to upgrade safety and sustain and support fishing capability at the harbour. The projects will allow for upgrading of the North and South entrance piers, a new winch and cradle for the slipway repair facility and clearance of contaminated mud from the inner harbour.Northern Ireland fisheries minister Brid Rodgers said:”I am totally committed to a viable and sustainable fisheries industry in Northern Ireland.”

She and her Executive colleagues recognised the excellent work of the local industry and its contribution to the local economy through providing high quality product for domestic use and for export to Europe and worldwide.

“It is vital that we maintain our operational fishing harbours in good order and provide safe facilities for our fishing vessels and for quality handling of marine product”She said the funding is a strong vote of confidence in Kilkeel from the Executive and while the project represented a major step it was only part of a strategic development plan for harbour facilities across the Province.
