SNP MEP and member of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee Ian Hudghton has warmly welcomed new figures which show a three per cent increase in the value of fish landed by Scottish vessels in 2008 and said these underline the continuing importance of Scotland’s fishing sector.
Mr Hudghton said: ‘Working together with SNP MEPs and fishing communities, the Scottish government has been the first to put this vital industry at the top of the agenda.
‘As a result of the hard work and innovation of those in the sector, backed by the Scottish government doing everything in its power to help, Scotlands fisheries industry is creating and sustaining jobs in our coastal communities.
‘In government and in Europe, the SNP is the only party who will speak up for Scotland’s fishing communities. As Europe rewrites its fisheries policy in the upcoming session, a strong voice for Scotlands fisheries is more necessary than ever.’
