Hudghton backs call for Scotland to lead fisheries talks Published:  19 July, 2007

SNP President Ian Hudghton, who accompanied First Minister Alex Salmond during his recent talks in Brussels with Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg, is backing the SNP call for Scottish Fisheries Minister to be given the lead role in all EU fishing negotiations.

Commenting, Mr Hudghton said: “It is entirely a matter of logic that Scotland, with the vast majority of the UK’s fishing interests, should take the lead for the whole UK in Brussels horse-trading sessions.

“It is not the same for Scotland’s Minister to be permitted occasionally to speak. When we say ‘lead’ we mean ‘lead all negotiating sessions’ in the run up to EU Councils of Ministers.”
