Grimsby fish company wins top UK transport award Published:  11 November, 2010

SEACHILL of Grimsby, one of the country’s leading suppliers of chilled and fresh fish, to the retail trade has been acknowledged as the company with the best logistics and transport practice in Britain.

The honour was announced at the 2010 Chartered Institute For Logistics Transport Awards For Excellence. The award was given after working in partnership with Zetes, the leading pan European value added solutions company. Both were winners of the coveted first prize.

The Institute’s Annual Awards for Excellence are designed to promote and encourage best practice within logistics and transport. Seachill is part of the Icelandic Group which also includes Coldwater Seafoods in Grimsby.

To accommodate increased orders demand from the Tesco chain,S eachill’s largest customer, Seachill needed a solution, which allowed fully automated picking and dispatch processes. Working with Zetes, the company implemented the Visidot image capture solution. Capable of reading and analysing hundreds of barcodes in just seconds, Visidot delivered high performance in reducing errors and, hence, reducing claims.

Steve Wallace, IT Manager at Seachill who led the project, said: “Getting an award like this validates all the hard work that everyone on the team put into improving our processes. No other company in our industry has invested in technology of this nature before and the impact of using Visidot played an important part in reducing overheads and improving customer service during what continues to be a challenging economic environment.”

Alain Wirtz, head  of Zetes, said: “We are pleased to receive this award together with Seachill, as it recognises the value both companies place on supply chain innovation. Zetes recently made the investment to add Visidot to its solution portfolio, because we strongly believed in the power of the technology and the profits it would bring to our customers, and Seachill has been one of the first companies to integrate it.”

Footnote: It was double celebration for the Seachill operation in Grimsby when one of its brand products, the Saucy Fish Company, along with DSSmith Corrugated of Lout, won a highly-commended prize in the UK Packaging Awards. The two companies worked closely together for packaging for its baked-in-the bag fish products.
