Scottish fishing campaigner Carol MacDonald today welcomed news that a TV documentary which had traced the agony of a North-east of Scotland family forced to take their vessel to Denmark for scrapping had carried off the best drama documentary award at the Scottish BAFTA awards.

“This provides a bit of recognition for the industry’s problems, “ she said. Mrs MacDonald helped to set up the Cod Crusaders, which is circulating a petition round the UK to lobby politicians. Sean Connery is one high profile signatory.

She added that the Cod Crusaders hoped to present their petition calling for national control of UK waters to the Scottish Parliament in advance of December’s fisheries council in Brussels.

So far, the petition has collected 152,000 signatures and there are also plans to present it to the Westminster and European Parliaments.
