Fisheries agreement signed between Portugal and Norway Published:  23 February, 2006

THE Norwegian Fisheries and Coastal minister Helga Pedersen and the Portuguese Fisheries minister Jaime Silva yesterday (Wednesday) signed a control agreement between Portugal and Norway, with the aim of gaining control over landings of cod from the Barents Sea.

The agreement is the first that Norway has entered into that also covers mutual reporting of landings of fish from third-country vessels.

“This is an important contribution to the work in order to gain control over the illegal fishing and over landings of fish to European harbours. From the Norwegian side work is now being pursued to enter into this kind of agreement with other European authorities”, Ms Helga Pedersen said in a statement.

The agreements signed yesterday are in accordance with the agreements that the minister discussed earlier this week with the Spanish fisheries minister Elena Espinosa Mangana.
