EU Commissioner urged to reform the Common Fisheries Policy Published:  04 February, 2011

BUSINESSES and conservationists met EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki in London yesterday and urged on her to deliver ambitious reforms of the Common Fisheries Policy.

After the meeting, Damanaki said: “The FAO annual report on fisheries published on Monday shows once again that overfishing must stop and that we need real reform if we want to make our policies sustainable. Only a broad societal awareness and public support can bring about real change in fisheries policy. We need effective campaigns like Hugh’s Fish Fight to wake up people to support change. We equally need the assistance of strong industry and environmental leaders like those I have met in London today to deliver reform throughout Europe that will secure a future for fish and fisheries alike, as well as the marine environment that supports them.”

WWF, members of AIPCE-CEP and the Food and Drink Federation, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain, presented Commissioner Damanaki with an evaluation of the CFP and the required recipe for sustainable fisheries.
