Commission responds to anchovy closure call Published: 14 June, 2005
FOLLOWING advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which has recommended an immediate closure of the anchovy fishery in the Bay of Biscay, the European Commission has started an internal procedure with a view to putting in place emergency measures to close this fishery. The Commission says that as is the normal custom in this kind of situation, they will examine all relevant data or scientific advice provided to them before a formal decision is taken on these measures.
Meanwhile French fishermen have already been demonstrating against the proposed closures.
