Boom time for Scottish mussels Published:  02 September, 2005

THE Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) are experiencing a boom in business and are expanding to capture more of the £60million European seafood market.

SSMG completed its financial year on 31st August and is expecting to report a 20% increase in turnover, and associated leaps in profit. Sales director Donny Gillies said, “We are pushing hard to put Scottish shellfish on tables across Europe and build on the excellent reputation it has throughout the Continent. Demand has been massive and we are expecting to meet it at both home and abroad.”

Over half of all Scottish mussels harvested come from SSMG, who have increased production from 1,500 tonnes to over 2,100 tonnes this year to meet market demand. The recent boom in mussel sales have brought about changes to the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) as the group recently has made a number of new appointments. The company recently appointed Mr Gillies as Sales Director, Ian Hird as Production Manager, Calum McCafferty as Operations Manager and Linda Crawford as Product Development Manager. The new appointments follow the recent announcement of a £400,000 investment for new production lines and equipment at their main manufacturing plant in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Up to twenty new jobs will be created as processing increases by 50%.
