ASSG holding annual conference in Oban Published: 07 October, 2008
The Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers (ASSG) will hold its annual conference in the Corran Halls, Oban on October 23-24.
The conference comes at an interesting time in the expanding Scottish shellfish sector. The first day, chaired by John Holmyard of Offshore Shellfish Ltd is introduced by Michael Russell MSP and features a keynote address by the leading Irish academic, Professor Gavin Burnell, on research as a driver for the development of the shellfish sector.
The first day’s programme also includes presentations on the European Fisheries Fund and planning issues brought about by new legislation, as well as talks by a range of international speakers from the Netherlands, USA, France and Canada and closes with the conference dinner in the Waterfront Restaurant.
The first half of the second day’s presentations, chaired by Walter Spiers of Muckairn Mussels, are focused on water quality issues with talks by experts from CEFAS and FRS on algal toxins and viruses.
The conference programme closes with a discussion on the future of the ASSG following the departure of its long-standing chairman, Doug McLeod to Australia.
