Another great accolade for Fishstock Brixham Published: 27 November, 2012
Devon’s number One Seafood and Music Festival held in Brixham in September has won a Judges Commendation in the Devon Tourism Awards held on 22nd November at the Saunton Sands Hotel.
The Award follows the earlier title of Best Tourism Event of the Year in the S Devon and Torbay Awards and heaps further praise on the team of volunteers for this event for the Fishermen’s Mission, led by Jim Portus.
Fishstock Brixham 2012 picked up the Commendation in a tight contest won by the big-budget Agatha Christie Festival. In Silver place was the sporting event Tour of Britain Devon-leg.
Team leader Jim Portus said: “Fishstock Brixham is the key fund-raising event for the Fishermen’s Mission in Brixham. Providing care, welfare and support for distressed fishermen, widows and orphans is a harrowing task taken ably by Mission Superintendents like our John Anderson. This year the event grew in popularity and raised £10,000 for the mission.”
Superintendent of the Brixham Mission Centre, John Anderson said: “Fishstock Brixham is a cash lifeline that is organised and run entirely by volunteers and is exclusively for the Mission funds. The Fishermen’s Mission is the only charity providing this type of welfare and support in our fishing communities.”
Jim added: “I am so proud and pleased for the team. They worked so hard to achieve much in a very short space of time. Having deservedly won the Herald Express Tourism Event of the Year they will be elated to add another accolade. We won the Heritage and Craft Association Volunteer of the Year Award in 2011 and this event truly is putting Brixham’s Seafood, fishing and maritime heritage on the Tourist Map.
“We are all looking forward to welcoming many thousands to the 5th Annual Fishstock Brixham on Saturday 7th September 2013.
“New Chefs, Bands, Acts and Maritime themes will be added through the coming months and will be posted on the website www.fishstockbrixham.co.uk“
