Aberdeenshire Council back calls to end destructive fishing method Published:  17 June, 2004

Aberdeenshire ‘s Provost Raymond Bisset, the chairman of the North East of Scotland Fishing Development Partnership, is backing a bid to stop the use of multi-rig trawl by all EU fishing vessels.

The Scottish White Fish Producers Association is lobbying Ross Finnie MP, rural development and fisheries minister, calling for an immediate cessation to the use of multi-rig trawl by all EU fishing vessels.

Mr Bisset said: “As chair of the Fishing Development Partnership I would certainly add our support to this.

“We totally support the White Fish Producers Association and would call on the Scottish Executive and the Commission to ensure legislation is put in place to prevent multi-rig trawl by fishing vessels from other countries.”

He continued: “This practice goes against all methods of conservation. I can understand the frustration felt by Scottish fishers who are working hard to conserve stocks. Multi-rig trawl is going-on in the North Sea and tonnes of immature haddock are being discarded without any thought for conservation.”
